Access to history

Accessibility statement

We want people with disabilities to be able to read, explore, and revisit this independent history site.

Our approach

We use WCAG 2.2 Level AA as our technical accessibility target. We have not completed a full conformance evaluation and do not claim that every page or interaction meets every requirement.

The site uses headings, landmarks, descriptive image alternatives, a skip link, visible keyboard focus, and a reduced-motion style. These foundations do not establish how every browser or assistive technology will behave.

What we reviewed

On October 28, 2026, we used Xezom Accessibility (XA) beta 2 to capture 10 rendered task states from the published site, followed by Codex-assisted inspection of the evidence and source and a completed hosted XA AI assessment. The sample covered the home page, the 2009 inauguration guide, the inaugural speech guide, and the historical collection, at 1440 and 320 CSS pixels wide.

  • Keyboard entry reached the skip link; after activation, the next Tab reached the main reading action in the in-app browser.
  • The captured task reached the inauguration and speech guides, opened the narrow-layout menu, navigated to the collection, and reloaded the collection.
  • The sampled narrow-layout navigation controls remained within the viewport. Headings, image alternatives, breadcrumbs, and source links were inspected in the rendered evidence and source.

This was a limited internal review, including hosted XA analysis of the captured semantic evidence and six selected screenshots, not an independent audit or a full conformance evaluation. The hosted assessment identified two task-friction improvements: closing the mobile menu after destination navigation, and adding direct collection links at the ends of the sampled guides. Both improvements were implemented on October 28, 2026. A targeted follow-up verified that pointer and keyboard navigation open the destination with the mobile menu closed, the next Tab can reach the skip link, and both guide endings link directly to the collection. The assessment did not establish a WCAG failure. The navigation task combined keyboard checks with automated control activation; it was not an exhaustive keyboard-only test.

Ways to navigate

Press Tab from the start of a page to reach “Skip to main content.” On a narrow screen, open Menu to find the main sections. Article contents links jump to sections, and breadcrumbs provide a route back. The speech guide links to the archived full transcript; the collection identifies the sources of original records.

Limitations and next checks

  • Screen-reader announcements and reading order have not been tested with VoiceOver, NVDA, or JAWS in this review.
  • A complete keyboard-only review, contrast and target-size audit, browser zoom and text-spacing checks, and testing with disabled readers remain to be completed. A 320-pixel viewport check is not a substitute for all zoom tests.
  • Linked archival websites, PDFs, recordings, captions, and transcripts are maintained by other organizations and were outside this review. Their accessibility may differ from this site.
  • This sample does not cover every article, browser, device, or error condition. No accessibility score or certification is implied.
